Hamilton Pool

This Spring Break, my sister and I took a trip to Hamilton Pool. Hamilton Pool is just outside of Austin, about 45-50 minutes from downtown. Hamilton Pool is a natural pool in a grotto surrounded by beautiful scenery and close to a view of the Pedernales River. The pool is accessible by reservation only from March to October, which also might be the best time go, since the warmer weather might permit a swim. There is a morning slot from 9 am to 1 pm and an afternoon slot from 2 pm to 6 pm available, and entry is not allowed past 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm, respectively. We chose to take the afternoon slot, since it was March and the mornings were still a little chilly. The reservation fee is $11 online and an additional $15 cash is charged upon arrival per vehicle.

Upon arrival, we parked and took the short hike down to the pool. The water was pristine and a beautiful blue hue; it really was a breathtaking view. I felt like I could spend all day there. The sign at the booth when we arrived said that swimming was currently allowed but the water was 56 degrees Fahrenheit that day, yet we were determined to get a swim in. The water was freezing, much like taking an ice bath. We started slowly, but finally took the plunge. It felt pretty awful at first, but then it became comfortable, yes comfortable! It felt like many warm pins and needles all over the body. We swam around for a good while, and then got out to walk around the pool and warm up in the sun that had come out.

Although the reserve had a good amount of visitors that day, it did not feel overly crowded, and we were able to enjoy our experience thoroughly. After spending some time enjoying the scenery, we took the trail to the Pedernales River viewing area. The hike took about 20 minutes each way, and was lovely and scenic. The end revealed a peaceful view of the Pedernales River, with clear running water. Overall, the experience was absolutely wonderful and one of a kind, and definitely a must-see for anyone visiting Austin, Texas.
